Greathead
Bay
St
Vincent and Grenadines

I
believe the Bay may have been named after Lieutenant Colonel John Greathead who
left England for St Vincent on an assignment with the British Army. A
Captain Herbert Palmer Cox whose name can be found in the St Vincent Militia
Commanders lists as Ensign in 1789 serving with Lieutenant Colonel John
Greathead, was a prominent individual on St Vincent. He was christened on 29
September 1748 at Saint Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London,
England. He was sent to St Vincent probably after 1770 where he married
Jane Alexander on 6 August 1774. She was the daughter of Hon. Harry
Alexander and Lydia Martin, natives of Antigua.
They
had seven children: Lydia Prisca and Margaret Jane who were twins; John
George; Francis James; Anne Elizabeth; Paul Greathead and Douglas
Leith.
Sadly
Paul Greathead Cox who was christened 18 October 1789 in St George's
Anglican Cathedral, Kingstown, St Vincent died on 4 December 1789. I
wonder whether he was named after his fathers commanding officer at the
time.
