The ceremony was witnessed by Edward Fisher and Charles Augustus Tudway. Both Josih and his father were listed as coopers and Mary's father a abourer. Both Josiah and Mary signed the certificate with a X.2,3 In the census of 7 April 1861 in 7 Coleston Place, Temple, Bristol, Somerset, England, she was listed as the wife of Josiah Hazel Greethead Joseph was a labourer and Mary a laundress, living with them was Joseph's mother in law.4 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Bristol City Workhouse, Stapleton, Bristol, Somerset, England, she was listed as an inmate and laundress aged 50 and married. I found this entry and believe it may be correct although the listing only gives initials. The initials are M A B, although giving the Bristol accent one might understand how this could happen. No other entries would seem correct.5 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Bristol City Workhouse, Stapleton, Bristol, Somerset, England, she was listed as an inmate
and laundress. She was also listed as a widow.6 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Bristol City Workhouse, Stapleton, Bristol, Somerset, England, she was listed as an inmate she was employed as a laundress.7 She died on 2 May 1900 in Bristol workhouse, Stapleton, Bristol, Somerset, England, Heart disease.8

James Henry Greathead
He married Blanche Emily Caldecott Coryndon, daughter of Selby Coryndon and Emily Caldecott, on 10 July 1884 in St Matthews, Bayswater, London, England.12,2,4,7,13 From 1885 to 1890 James and his family lived at Birchwood, St Marys Grove, Barnes in London.3 James was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 5 April 1891 in Ravenscraig, Leigham Court Road, Streatham Hill, London, England, James was a civil engineer, The family also had three servants.14 He died on 21 October 1896 in Ravenscraig, Leigham Court Road, Streatham Hill, London, England, aged 52 from Stomach cancer. His business was 15 Victoria Street, Westminster.3,4,7,6,15,2,16 He was buried in Norwood Cemetary, Norwood Road, Norwood, London, England, in Grave 27,103, Square 83.2,4,17 A memorial notice appeared in the Guardian newspaper for James on 24 October 1896. It announce his death at Streatham and went on to say, he had carried out many extensive engineering works, and will be remembered as the pioneer in the system of tunnelling called after him. The City and South London Railway had been in operation about five years, and others were in the course of construction. The ingenious device of the Greathead shield enabled tunnel to be driven under buildings without disturbance, and under rivers wihout danger to the workmen. This and the Greathead grouting machine have made his name known al over the world in connection with engineering enterprise.18 The will of James was proved on 29 December 1896 in London to his widow Blanche and Basil Mott a civil engineer. It was dated 14 October 1896 and gave his address as 15 Victoria Street, Westminster and Ravenscraig, Leigham Court Road, Streatham. His effects were valued at £18874 15s 8d.16,19 A Blue Plaque donated by National Heritage to James Henry Greathead was placed on his former home at 3 St Mary's Grove, Barnes, on 18 February 2000. It was attended by Tony Roche (Deputy President, Institution of Mechanical Engineers), Jim Moriarty (Civil Engineer, London Underground), Councillor Michael Jones (Mayor, London Borough of Richmond), Francis Carnwath (Chairman, London Commemorative Plaques Panel, English Heritage), and James Butler (sculptor of the statue of Greathead in the City). The plaque reads "James Henry Greathead 1844-1896 Railway and Tunnelling Engineer lived here 1885-1889". The unveiling was carried out by Jim Greathead, the engineer's grandson.17

Isaac Greathead was born on 31 March 1837 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.2,1,3,4 He was the son of Isaac Wilkenson Greathead and Ann Morrall. In the census of 7 June 1841 in New Canal Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, he was listed as the son of Isaac Wilkenson Greathead.5 He was baptized on 13 September 1847 in Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, Margaret, Elizabeth, William, John, George, Isaac and Ann were all baptised together. This may suggest that after the baptism of their first child in 1832 they followed another religion. Non-conformity in Birmingham at this time was extremely popular. For some reason the family must have decided to return to the Church of England in 1847 and rebaptise their children.3,6,7 In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the son of Isaac Wilkenson Greathead Isaac was a bellows maker who would have made bellows for the use in organs or with blacksmith's fires.4,1 He lived with Jane Cox. He was baptized on 26 March 1828 in Wesleyan Chapel, Holmfirth, Yorkshire, England.2,5,4 In the census of 7 June 1841 in Petters Street, Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, he was listed as the son of Samuel Greathead.6 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Waterloo Road, Maughold, Isle of Man, he was listed as a lodger of Catherine Cannell. He was a Wesleyan Minister.7 He married Mary Allen Christian, daughter of Robert Christian, on 18 August 1853 in Kirk Maughold, St Maughold, Ramsey, Isle of Man, by Rev Bower Harrison.
