     Thomas Greathead was born in 1880 in Burnhope, Durham, England.1,2,3 He was the son of William Thomas Greathead and Mary Isabella Anderson. In the census of 3 April 1881 in 25 Office Street, Brandon and Byshottles, Durham, England, he was listed as a boarder of Matthew Anderson Thomas and his parents are boarding with his grandparents.4 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Hedley Cottages, Kyo, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Thomas Greathead Thomas was a scholar.5 He married Mary Jane Gibson on 15 September 1900 in Teesdale, Durham, England, Mary was Thomas first wife.6,7 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Headley Cottages, South Moor, Oxhill, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Thomas Greathead Thomas was a horsekeeper at the coal mine.8 Thomas signed up on 3 June 1915 giving his address as 39 Maple Steet, South Moor, his age as 35 and occupation as a miner. He was mentioned in dispatches and was discharged as sergeant Greathead on 30 March 1919.7 His wife Mary died on 1920 in Lanchester, Durham, England.9 He married Elizabeth Tinnion in 1921 in Lanchester, Durham, England, Elizabeth was Thomas' second wife.10 He died in 1935 in Lanchester, Durham, England.11

In the census of 2 April 1871 in East Road, Romanby, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Henry Greathead Jane was a scholar.2 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Silverdale Road, Wolstanton, Staffordshire, England, she was listed as the servant of John E and Sarah A North.3 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Romanby village, Romanby, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as a domestic servant.4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Romanby, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Mary Greathead.5 John died on 28 April 1929. The Probate of her estate was received in London on 10 September 1929 by his sisters Jane Elizabeth Greathead who was a spinster and Mary Hannah Gibson a widow.6 She died on 4 August 1937 in Church Cottage, Roxby, Saltburn, Staithes, Yorkshire, England, Jane did not marry.7,6 The will of Jane was proved on 1 October 1937 in London to her niece Winifred Porritt Welford who was the wife of Joseph Walford. Her effects were valued at £275 0s 2d.6

     Sarah Dillon was born about 1810 in Solihull, Warwickshire, England.1 She married Joseph Greathead, son of John Greathead and Elizabeth Briband, on 20 August 1839 in St Peter and St Paul's Church, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremont was witnessed by Thomas Greathead and Harriot Eaves. Both gave their address as Vauxhall Lane, Duddeston. Sarah was Joseph's second wife. He was employed as a licensed victualler.2 In the census of 7 June 1841 in Sodom, Sedgeley, Staffordshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Joseph Greathead.3 Her husband Joseph died on 1846 in Meriden, Warwickshire, England.4 In the census of 30 March 1851 at 37 Grosvenor Square, St George Hanover Square, London, England, she was listed a nurse with Catherine Pole and hre family. Recently widowed her son John was also in London working as a servant. Her other son Henry was at school in London and later joined the navy.5 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 36 Hyde Park Square, Paddington, London, England, she was listed as the servant of William Longman and his family working as a nurse, domestic servant.6 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 36 Hyde Park Square, Paddington, London, England, she was listed again as the servant of the Longman family working as a nurse. Emma Longman was listed as the head of the household and was declared as a widow. She probably did not know where Sarah was born, her husband probably completed the return in 1871. The 1881 enumeration sheet gives the place of birth as Streatham, Surrey.7 She died on 18 May 1886 in 20 Montefiore Street, Battersea, Wandsworth, London, England.8,9 Her death was registered on 19 May 1886 by her son Henry in the Wandsworth Register Office. The cause of her death was Carcinousa. Administration papers were issued with a will on 4 June 1886 at the Principal Registry by her son Henry Brisband Greathead # 2334 of 20 Montefiore Street. He was an Inspector of Fire Appliances and the sole executor. The personal estate was under £2696 13s. It was resworn in July 1886 and declared to be £2730 17s 4d.

Henry however died on 8 April 1889 so on 17 June 1889 the estate (with the will) was left unadministered. It was granted at the Principal Registry to his widow Eliza Greathead # 2335 of 28 Grandison Road, Clapham in the said County. The personal estate was now declared to be under £485 9s 3d A further grant was given in May 1896.9

He married Sarah Dillon on 20 August 1839 in St Peter and St Paul's Church, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Agnes Seaman and Mary Piper. Both James and Sarah gave their address as 3 Narrow Street, and James was described as a labourer.4 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 7 Rivers Street Court, Bromley, London, England, she was listed as the wife of James Walker.5

In the census of 30 March 1851 at Christ Church School, Wandsworth, London, England, he was listed as a scholar at the Royal Asylum of St Anns Society.5 In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as a sailor on HMS Hornet, which was a Royal navy ship at sea or in port abroad.6 He married Eliza Lowing in 1867 in Clerkenwell, London, England.7 Henry was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 in 5 Stanhope Street, St Clement Danes, London, England, Henry was a foreman at the theatre.8 Henry was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 3 April 1881 in 19B Block Peabody Buildings, Lambeth, London, England, Henry was a Metropolitan Municiple Fireman.9 He died on 8 April 1889 in 28 Grandison Road, Clapham Common, London, England, aged 47.10,11 He did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 11 May 1896 in London to his son John James Greathead who was a licensed conductor. His effects were valued at £56 17s 8d after a former grant in May 1889. Henry was listed as an inspector of fire applications.11

     Eliza Lowing was born about 1847 in Laughton, Essex, England.1 She married Henry Brisband Greathead, son of Joseph Greathead and Sarah Dillon, in 1867 in Clerkenwell, London, England.4 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 5 Stanhope Street, St Clement Danes, London, England, she was listed as the wife of Henry Brisband Greathead.5 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 19B Block Peabody Buildings, Lambeth, London, England, she was listed as the wife of Henry Brisband Greathead.6 She died on 3 November 1890 in 28 Grandison Road, Clapham Common, London, England, Eliza's husband had died the previous year - 1889.7,8 The will of Eliza was proved on 3 December 1890 at the Principal Registry to Kate weeks who was widow of one of the Executors and living at the same address as Eliza. her effects were valued at under £162 1s 0d.8

     Henry Percy Greathead was born on 2 August 1867 in Cripplegate, London, England.2,3,4 He was the son of Henry Brisband Greathead and Eliza Lowing. In the census of 2 April 1871 in 5 Stanhope Street, St Clement Danes, London, England, he was listed as the son of Henry Brisband Greathead.5 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 19B Block Peabody Buildings, Lambeth, London, England, he was listed as the son of Henry Brisband Greathead Henry was a scholar.6 Henry first set sail on 11 January 1883 and served on many ships. His service number was 121880 and he was described as five foot six inches tall, dark brown hair, light brown eyes, fresh complexion and had a rose in a flower pot tattooed on his left arm. He gave his occupation as a compositor.

I will when time permits add details of the ships on which he sailed.4 He married Eliza Hunt, daughter of Joseph Hunt and Jane ..., on 3 March 1889 in Wandsworth, London, England.7,8,9 Henry aged 23 and Eliza aged 20 sailed on the Lusitania in April 1889 shortly after their marriage on an unassisted passage to Victoria.10 Henry and Eliza lived at 6 Chaplin Street, Darlinghurst, New South Wales when their son Bert enlisted in 1915.11 Sadly Henry and Eliza lost one son in infancy and three to the war.11 He died in 1940 in Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia, His mother was listed as Anne on the New South Wales death index. I think this was a transcription error.12

     John James Greathead was born in 1870 in Lambeth, London, England.2,3,4 He was the son of Henry Brisband Greathead and Eliza Lowing. In the census of 2 April 1871 in 5 Stanhope Street, St Clement Danes, London, England, he was listed as the son of Henry Brisband Greathead.5 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 19B Block Peabody Buildings, Lambeth, London, England, he was listed as the son of Henry Brisband Greathead John was a scholar.6 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Albatross ship, Isle of Man, he was listed as a crewman.7 He married Emily Eliza Root, daughter of Richard Root, on 14 July 1891 in St Mary, Hornsey, Essex, England, The ceremony was witnessed by L Downs and James Foster after the banns had been read. John was described as a fireman living at 82 Umfreville Road. Emily gave her address as 10 Portland Road, Finsbury Park.8,9 John's father died on 8 April 1889. He received administration on 11 May 1896 in London. He was listed as a licensed conductor.10 John was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 at 27 Heath Street, Barking, Essex, England, John was a General Worker.4 John who gave his address as 78 Beaconsfield Road, South Tottenham on 20 March 1915 signed on for short service for the duration of the war. He was described as a married labourer, aged 44 years 9 months. His wife Eliza was given as his next of kin at the same address



He had previously signed on a year earlier on 10 November 1914 giving a false age, stating he was married, 37 years of age and a painter. He gave the same address.11 Private John (298074) had a private address in June 1920 as 116 Greyhound Road, South Tottenham, London. He was transferred to the Labour Corps in Nottingham in August 1921. He received the Victory Medal on 8 August 1921.9 He died on 29 September 1944 in 133 Balornock Road, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, from myocardial degeneration, chronic bronchitis and arteric sclerosis at 8:30 am. His usual address was 64 Bernard Road, Tottenham, London. His daughter Ethel registered his death. John was described as formerly a house painter journeyman married to Emily Eliza Root.12

In the census of 3 April 1881 in 19B Block Peabody Buildings, Lambeth, London, England, he was listed as the son of Henry Brisband Greathead Joseph was a scholar.5 He emigrated in 1892 to the USA.2 He married Alice Harvey, daughter of ... Harvey and ... Hedge, on 9 August 1905 in Essex, Ontario, Canada.2 Joseph was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 20 April 1910 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA, Joseph was a cook, he and Alice had two children but only one was still surviving in 1910.6 Joseph attestation papers were signed on 22 August 1917 giving his wife Alice as his next of kin living at 370 Patesky Avenue, Detroit. He was described as a cook and agreed to serve in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force.7 Joseph gave on his attestation papers for the Canadian Over Seas Expeditionary Force. his wife Alice as his next of kin, she lived at 370 Petosky Avenue, Detroit, Michigan. His hearing was described as normal and the vision in his right eye 20/80 and his left eye 20/20. He was declared fit on 22 August 1917 in Windsor, Ontario.8,9 According to his WW1 registration card dated 9 December 1918, Joseph signed up in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. He was tall and slender with blue eyes.10 Joseph and Alice applied for admission into Detroit, Michigan, US on 24 January 1924. They were both described as being aged 37. Joseph was a steam fitter. Their last address was listed as Windsor. They gave Jack Dallas of 361 Lincoln Road, Walkerville, brother to Alice, and brother in law to Joseph as being their closest relative living from whence they came. Their destination was listed as Los Angeles in California.11 Frederick was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 2 April 1930 in 5589 Marlborough, Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA, Frederick as he was enumerated was a steam fitter in the plumbing shop.12 His wife Alice died on 13 June 1941 in Los Angeles, California, USA, aged 55 Her death was announced in the Los Angeles Times of 14 June 1941 . Forest Lawn Mortuary were in charge of her funeral arrangements.13,14 He died on 2 March 1950 in South Gate, Los Angeles, California, USA, aged 75 from Cancer. He died whilst convalescing and living with is son Philip and his family in their home.4,15
