Edward Harris was born about 1790 in Uddens, Wimborne, Dorset, England, Edward was the third son.1,2 He was the son of John Harris and Mary Greathed.2 Edward's Godmother was his Aunt Sarah.3 Edward assumed the name and arms of Greathed by Royal Sign Manual, served on the personal staff of the Marquis of Huntly, commanding the forces in Scotland. This was as requested in the will of his uncle Edward Greathed who died in 1803.2 He married Mary Elizabeth Glyn, daughter of Richard Carr Glyn, on 12 August 1811 A marriage licence was issued on 12 August 1811.4,5,6 I believe the Mr and Mrs Greathed mentioned in the book "The Waterloo Ball" by Sir William Fraser (London 1897) attending the famous ball given by the Duke of Richmond on 15 June 1815 in Brussels are Edward and Mary Greathed. Wellington and most of the army top brass attended the ball. Whilst the ball was in full swing news arrived confirming that Napoleon and his army were advancing into Belgium, which led to the battle of Waterloo three days later. Legend has it that Wellington and his chiefs of staff hurried away straight to the British Army, many not having time to change out of their dancing shoes before engaging with the enemy. The event is commemorated in Byron's poem, "The Eve of Waterloo."7 He died in December 1840 in Paris, France, His death was registered in Marylebone register office.8,5,9 The will of Edward was proved on 21 September 1841 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. He had written his will in February 1830 stating that he was late of Uddens in the County of Dorset, now living in Paris, and appointed his wife Mary Elizabeth as his sole executrix. He said that his wife should be the guardian of their children until such time as their eldest son Edward attain the age of twenty-one when they together should assume the joint guardianship. He left all his all his estate and effects to his wife.8
