His plant breeding and development resulted in the "early rivers" nectarines, plums, cherries, peaches and most famous pear. He also introduced the late Valencia orange into California USA.¹

He was baptized on 18 October 1837 in Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales.⁴ In the census of 6 June 1841 in Petters Street, Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, he was listed as the son of Samuel Greathead.⁵ In the census of 30 March 1851 at Market Place, Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, he was listed as the son of Samuel Greathead Nicholas was a scholar.⁶ Nicholas emigrated to Canada.³ He married Laura Jack.
