     James Thomas Greathead was born on 9 October 1811 in Gillingham, Kent, England.2,1 He was the son of Samuel Greathead and Ann Sole. He was baptized on 4 November 1811 in Wesleyan Chapel (White Chapel), Rochester, Kent, England.1,3 James moved to Lowestoft where he formed his academy.3 He married Ann Astle, daughter of Thomas Astle and Ann ..., on 16 July 1840 in St Anne, Limehouse, London, England, of full age by licence. The ceremony was witnessed by Joseph Thomas Astle and Rachel Astle, officiated by R Rawlins. The licence was taken out on 14 Jul 1840. James was a private schoolmaster.4,1,5 James was listed as the head of the family on the census of 6 June 1841 in South Terrace, Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, James was listed as scholistic living with his wife.6 James was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Church Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, Thomas Astle aged nine, Thomas Harrison ages twelve, Harry Symonds aged twelve are boarders; and Caroline Shawl, servant aged twenty-one. James was a private schoolmaster.1,7 James was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 April 1861 in High Street, Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, England, James was a classical mathmatics and commercial teacher. His wife and children were living with him.8 James was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 2 April 1871 in High Street, Cricklade, Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, England, Both James and Ann are listed as scholastic.9 James was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 3 April 1881 in 1 St Johns Hill Grove, Battersea, London, England, James was a professional artist; a painter.10 His wife Ann died on 19 August 1882 in 7 Aspley Road, Wandsworth, London, England, She died from Acute Brights disease which she suffered for one month and Uroemia 30 hours. Her death was certified by E F Weatherhead MRCS
Her son Eugene Greathead was the informant and was present at her death. He registered the death on 21 August 1882 with G Howick who was the Registrar.11,1 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Maybury, 27 London Road, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England, he was listed as the father of Ernest Vincent Greathead
James was widowed and living on his own means.12 He died on 23 February 1902 in Maybury, 27 London Road, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England, aged 90 He died from senile decay. The death was certified by F Hinde MD. His son Ernest Vincent Greathead was the informant and his death was registered at Sawbridge on 24 February 1902 with Geo E W Akerman who was the Registrar.13,1

He married Margaret Dewhirst, daughter of Francis Henry Dewhirst and Maggie Boulby, on 30 October 1937 in Birmingham Registry Office, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, They married in Birmingham in a last attempt to get out of mining, but Margaret could not take to city life so they returned back to the North shortly after their marriage which was witnessed by I and W Whitehead. George was living at 51 Wandsworth Rd, Small Heath and Margaret in Elsinoie, Harrogate Rd, Alwoodley.3,1 He died in May 1991 in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England, aged 78.4

He was baptized on 3 September 1826 in Staindrop, Teesdale, Durham, England.1 He married Elizabeth Greathead, daughter of John Greathead and Mary Bland, on 6 November 1854 in St Mary, Barnard Castle, Teesdale, Durham, England, Elizabeth was Williams first wife and the ceremony was witnessed by John Davis and Ann Thompson.1,3,4 His wife Elizabeth died on 15 September 1860 in Ingleton, Teesdale, Durham, England, Elizabeth died from exhaustion from a difficult labour. Since no registration of a child can be found it is assumed the child was still born.1,4 William was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 April 1861 in Ingleton, Teesdale, Durham, England, William was a master joiner and was living with his children and housekeeper Margaret Greathead who was the sister of his dead wife. The enumerator wrote thier surname down incorrectly as Hewitson.5 He married Margaret Greathead, daughter of John Greathead and Mary Bland, on 26 March 1862 in Darlington, Durham, England, Margaret was William's second wife. He was previously married to her sister Elizabeth who died in 1861.
