     James Greathead was born on 2 October 1832 in Reading, Berkshire, England.2 He was the son of Thomas Greathead and Martha Milner. He was baptized on 21 November 1832 in St Mary Church, Reading, Berkshire, England.1,2,3 In the census of 6 June 1841 in Wesley Street, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Thomas Greathead.4 James cames to Natal on the SS Herald and went to join his family but on 12 September 1855 he sailed from the Cape back to England.5 He married Sarah Field, daughter of Peter Wilson Field and Susannah Rothery, on 26 November 1856 in St Judes Church, Islington, London, England, after a licence was issued. The ceremony was witnessed by Charles Field and Peter W Field. James gave his occupation as a clerk and lived at 28 Claremont Street, while Sarah gave her address as De Beauvoir Road.2,6,5 James, Sarah and baby Wilson were nominated for assisted passage under the new government assisted emigrated scheme, The family were living at the time in Holborn.5 He died on 21 October 1916 in The bee-hive, Swellendam, Cape Province, South Africa, aged 84 which was the home of his daughter Edith Beatrice.2

Thomas George Greathead
     Thomas George Greathead was born on 17 October 1900 in West Ham, London, England.2 He was the son of Charles Albert James Greathead and Mary Ann Rushby Bolton. In the census of 31 March 1901 in 24 Hartland Road, West Ham, London, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Albert James Greathead.3 He married Lilian Ferris, daughter of Andrew James Ferris, on 6 March 1922 in St. Marks, Victoria Park, Poplar, London, England, The ceremony was witnessed by Joseph Henry Cox and Mary Greathead. Thomas was a soldier. and Lilian gave her address as 6 Rippoth Road, Poplar.4 Thomas and Lilian had ten children all of which were evacuated from London in the war to Kent.1 He died on 18 May 1974 in War Memorial Hospital, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England, aged 73 from Bronchopneumonia, ureaemia, phenacetin nephropathy and hypertension.5

Lilian Greathead née Ferris
     Lilian Ferris was born on 18 September 1901 in Pancras, London, England, I believe she was registered as Florence Lilian E Ferris.2 She was the daughter of Andrew James Ferris. She married Thomas George Greathead, son of Charles Albert James Greathead and Mary Ann Rushby Bolton, on 6 March 1922 in St. Marks, Victoria Park, Poplar, London, England, The ceremony was witnessed by Joseph Henry Cox and Mary Greathead. Thomas was a soldier. and Lilian gave her address as 6 Rippoth Road, Poplar.3 Thomas and Lilian had ten children all of which were evacuated from London in the war to Kent.1 She died on 22 January 1972 in War Memorial Hospital, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England, aged 70 from Carcinomatosis and abdominal primary. Her usual address was No 2 Churchill House, Chipping Norton, Oxon.4
