     John Greathead was born in 1839 in Dudley, Staffordshire, England.1 He was the son of Joseph Greathead and Sarah Dillon. In the census of 6 June 1841 in Sodom, Sedgeley, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the son of Joseph Greathead.2 In the census of 30 March 1851 at 61 Mount Street, St George Hanover Square, London, England, John was listed as the visitor of Jane Ray and her children. His father had died in 1846 and his mother was now in London working as a nurse.3 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Lees Mews, Westminster, London, England, he was listed as a lodger of James Pantlin and wife, he was a gentlemans valet and described himself as born in Tividale Shropshire which is quite close to Warwickshire. He was very young when he left.4 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 3 Shepherds Court, Westminster, London, England, he was listed as a lodger of John Argent, he was a domestic servant.5 He married Eliza Taylor in 1871 in Marylebone, London, England.6 He died on 1 April 1873 in "Castle" Public House, Shepherds Court, Upper Brook Street, St George Hanover Square, London, England.7 He did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 31 July 1873 at the Principal Register to his wife Elizabeth. His effects were valued at under £450.8

     Mary Ann Greathead was born about 1816.2 She was the daughter of Paul Greathead. In the census of 6 June 1841 in Sedgefield, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Paul Greathead.3 Mention of Paul was found in a newspaper published in Toronto Canada: The Globe 4 Nov 1846. On the 23ult, at the residence of Mr John Chipchase, Guelph, Mr Walter McFarlane, to Miss Mary Ann, only daughter of Mr Paul Greathead, of Sedgefield, Durham, England.1 She married Walter McFarlane on 23 October 1846 in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, at the residence of Mr John Chipchase.4

     Mention of Paul was found in a newspaper published in Toronto Canada: The Globe 4 Nov 1846. On the 23ult, at the residence of Mr John Chipchase, Guelph, Mr Walter McFarlane, to Miss Mary Ann, only daughter of Mr Paul Greathead, of Sedgefield, Durham, England.1 Walter McFarlane married Mary Ann Greathead, daughter of Paul Greathead, on 23 October 1846 in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, at the residence of Mr John Chipchase.2

     William Thomas Greathead was born on 8 May 1910 in South Moor, Stanley, Lanchester, Durham, England, Did not know Annie when young, met in Yorkshire later in life.1,2
He was the son of Matthew Anderson Greathead and Isobella/e Dawson. William moved to South Kirby, near Pontefract in Yorkshire after the war, before settling down in Birmingham in early 1960's. Apparently he had a major disagreement with family and moved away from Yorkshire to Birmingham.1 He married Annie Sanderson, daughter of ... Sanderson and Deborah ..., on 25 November 1933 William was a miner.1,3 He died in May 1984 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1,4,5

     Elizabeth Greathead was born on 16 July 1834 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Isaac Wilkenson Greathead and Ann Morrall. In the census of 6 June 1841 in New Canal Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Isaac Wilkenson Greathead.4 She was baptized on 13 September 1847 in St Phillips, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, Margaret, Elizabeth, William, John, George, Isaac and Ann were all baptised together. This may suggest that after the baptism of their first child in 1832 they followed another religion. Non-conformity in Birmingham at this time was extremely popular. For some reason the family must have decided to return to the Church of England in 1847 and rebaptise their children.5,6 In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as the daughter of Isaac Wilkenson Greathead Betsey was a bellows maker who would have made bellows for the use in organs or with blacksmith's fires.3,1 She married Isaac Jarvis in 1857 in Kings Norton, Warwickshire, England.7 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Phillips Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Isaac Jarvis Isaac and Elizabeth were pearl button makers living with their children and Elizabeth's siblings.8 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 2 Porchester Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Isaac Jarvis.9 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Geach Street, Back 5 House 2, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Isaac Jarvis.10 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 2 Whitehead Street, Aston, Warwickshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Isaac Jarvis.11 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 128 William Street, Aston, Warwickshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Isaac Jarvis.12 She died in 1909 in Aston, Warwickshire, England.13

     Alan Greathead was born in 1890 in Rochester, Kent, England.1,2,3 He was the son of Joseph Arthur Waghorn Greathead and Mary Ann Todhunter. In the census of 5 April 1891 in 17 St Margaret Banks, Rochester, Kent, England, he was listed as the son of Joseph Arthur Waghorn Greathead.4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 15 Old Dover Road, Greenwich, London, England, he was listed as the son of Mary Ann Greathead.5 In the census of 2 April 1911 in Greenwich, London, England, he was listed as the son of Mary Ann Greathead.6 He a Captain in 9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. His English address was 93 Savernake Road, Hampstead, Middlesex. He went to France on 28 August 1916 but was killed in action. died on 20 November 1917 in France.1,7,8 He was buried in Cambrai Memorial, Louvernal Nord, France.1 The will of Alan was proved on 20 April 1918 in London to his mother Mary Ann Greathead who was a widow. His effects were valued at £484 2s 1d.7

     Eliza Hunt was born in 1868 in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, England.4,5 She was the daughter of Joseph Hunt and Jane ....3 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Victory Row, Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Joseph Hunt.6 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Union Workhouse, Purton, Wiltshire, England, she was listed as an inmate of the workhouse and scholar.7 She married Henry Percy Greathead, son of Henry Brisband Greathead and Eliza Lowing, on 3 March 1889 in Wandsworth, London, England.8,9,3 Henry aged 23 and Eliza aged 20 sailed on the Lusitania in April 1889 shortly after their marriage on an unassisted passage to Victoria.10 Henry and Eliza lived at 6 Chaplin Street, Darlinghurst, New South Wales when their son Bert enlisted in 1915.11 Sadly Henry and Eliza lost one son in infancy and three to the war.11

     Henry Percy Greathead was born in 1891 in Carlton, Victoria, Australia.1,2,3 He was the son of Henry Percy Greathead and Eliza Hunt. Henry was a shearing mechanic and followed the Church of England religion. He had been educated at Thirlow School.

He enlisted on 11 January 1916 as a Private into the 55th Battalion, regimantal number 1907, 3rg Reinforcement. His unit was embarked under roll number 23/72/3 with his brother Frederick from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A37 Barambah on 23 June 1916.

His father had served in the Royal Navy.4 He was killed in action on 2 April 1917 in Blighty Trench, Le Transloi, France.1,4 He was buried in Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery extension Pas de Calais Plot 1, Row B, Grave no 6, France, and appears on Panel 160 of the Roll of Honour on the Australian War Memorial.1,4 Henry lost both his brothers Frederick and Bert to the war.4

He enlisted as a Private into 55th Battalion of the Australian Infantry, 3rd Reinforcement on 5 January 1916. The Regimental number was 1908. The unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales with his brother Henry on board HMAT A37 Barambah on 23 June 1916 under embarkation roll number 23/72/3.

Chart 26: William Greathead
     Bert William Greathead was born in 1894 in Kingsdale, Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Henry Percy Greathead and Eliza Hunt. Bert was a labourer following the Church of England religion, and lived with his parents in 6 Chaplin Street, Darlinghurst, New South Wales. He had attended Kingsdale Public School, New South Wales.

He enlisted as a Private on 12 November 1915 into the 20th Battalion, 11 Reinforcement of the Australian Infantry, Regimental number 4427. He was described as aged 21 years 11 months, being five feet eight inches tall. He weighed 4 stone 6 pounds and had a chest measurement of 37 inches. His complexion was dark, he had blue eyes and brown hair. The unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 9 April 1916. His embarkation number was 23/37/2. His father had served in the Royal Navy.

Bert was admitted to hospital with mumps in January 1917. In October 1917 he was reported as missing in action in Belgium. This was later changed to Killed in action. He was awarded the Victory Medal, his was received by his father on 5 March 1928.3 He was killed in action on 9 October 1917 in Zonnebeke, Belgium.1,3 He was buried in Buttes New British Cemetery, Plot 5, Row A Grave No 18, Polygon Wood, Zonnebeke, West Vlaanderen, Belgium, His name appears on Panel number 91 on the Roll of Honour, Australian War Memorial.1,3,5 Bert lost his brothers Frederick and Henry to the war.3

     Elsie Maud Halle was born in 1875 in Hackney, London, England.2,3 She was the daughter of Samuel Brown Halle.1 She married Albert Edward Clifford Greathead, son of Walter George Greathead and Amelia Eliza Booth, on 10 October 1903 in St Saviour, Walthamstow, Essex, England, R L Allwork married them after the banns had been read. The ceremony was withnessed by Walter George Greathead the groom's father and Juanita Isabella Williams. Both bride and groom gave their address as 109 Acacia Road. Albert worked as a decorator like his father Walter.4 She and Albert Edward Clifford Greathead emigrated in 1907 together with their son to Canada Albert.2 In the census of 1 June 1911 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, she was listed as the wife of Albert Edward Clifford Greathead.5

In the census of 7 April 1861 in 219 City Road, Finsbury, London, England, he was listed as the son of Featherstone Greathead John was a scholar.2 He died in 1869 in Islington, London, England.3

     Laura Gertrude Dixon was born about 1880. She was the daughter of George Dixon. She married Frank Greathead, son of Thomas William Greathead and Ellen Palmer, on 13 March 1907 in Holy Trinity, Birchfield, Stafford, Staffordshire, England, By banns N T Langley vicar witnessed by B M Dixon and Nellie Greathead (sister) Frank 25 bachelor and law clerk, Laura 27 spinster.2 Laura was living at 155, Albert Rd., Aston Manor, Birmingham when she received news of her husbands death.1 Her husband Frank died on 24 April 1917 in France He was killed in action.1,3 Laura was living in Tottenham in Middlesex when her son, Kenneth died in 1945.4 She died in 1957 in Plymouth, Devon, England.5
