     Edith Florine Phil(l)ips was born about 1863 in Cape Colony, South Africa.3 She married Octavius Ernest Greathead, son of James Henry Greathead and Eliza Julia Wright, on 23 February 1884 in Aliwal North, Cape Town, South Africa.1,4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Vellore, St Mary Church, Devon, England, she was listed as a widow staying as a visitor with Elinor Harding and her sister Lucy. All living on their own means.5

He married Florence Plewman, daughter of Charles Plewman and Mary Bowler, in 1890 in Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, 2nd husband.5,1 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Upland Tavern, Crystal Palace Road, Camberwell, London, England, he was listed as the servant and barman.6 He died on 31 May 1928 in Rustenburg, Transvaal, South Africa, aged 66.1,7

Emily Elizabeth Greathead née Stanton
     Emily was the second daughter and seventh child. Her earliest memory was of watching funeral courtage of her brother Herbert (1st child) born 1857 died 1872 with her mother, as women did not go to burials in those days. Herbert was kicked in the head by a horse in 1867 he had a silver plate screwed over the hole. In 1872 he was kicked again in the head and died.3 Emily Elizabeth Stanton was born on 24 August 1870 in Kingwilliamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, Emily was brought into the world by her father in an ox wagon. The black midwife arrived late, this was known as Kafreria.

When she ws two months old, herparents after wrapping her in blankets, fled with her when plundering tribesmen set fire to their farmhouse.1,2,3 She was the daughter of John Stanton and Charlotte Whittle. She married Henry Percival Greathead, son of William Wright Greathead and Emily Jane Halse, on 19 August 1890 in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa, Emily had spent most of her life in Ficksburg until her marriage when she and her husband moved to Johannesurg. Two years later they settled on their Barvale farm, near Nelspruit.1,2 Her husband Henry died on 31 October 1930 in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa, aged 63 and Emily shouldered the responsibilty of carrying on the farm and rearing the children.2 Emily celebrated his 100th birthday with a family party. She was still getting up at 5 o'clock every Friday when she travelled to Nelspruit to visit the morning market and doing her weekly shopping.4 She died in August 1975 in Transvaal, South Africa, The newspaper article about her death stated she had been in bed with influenza but seem to recovereing when she beacme ill again. She died of pneumonia on the farm near King William's Town.1,2

     John Stanton was born in Fort Beaufort, Cape Town, South Africa.2 He married Charlotte Whittle. He was buried in Heros half acre (50 metres from the main gate), Pretoria, South Africa.2 John was descended from 1820 settler. He formed "Stanton Horse" to fight Basutos in the Bashuto War.2

Charlotte Whittle1,2

     Charlotte Whittle was born in 1836 in England.3 Charlotte arrived in South Africa in 1844, was carried off the boat on the shoulders of a black man in Port Elizabeth as there was no harbour.3 She married John Stanton. She died in 1935.3

Dorothy Charlotte Greathead
     Dorothy Charlotte Greathead was born on 25 June 1891 in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa.1,2 She was the daughter of Henry Percival Greathead and Emily Elizabeth Stanton. She married James Merriman Greathead, son of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Esther Louisa Merriman, on 18 September 1915 in Addo, Cape Town, South Africa, Shortly after his marriage James went off to England to join the engineers in the English Army at Aldershot. He then went to the front and built bridges, for which he won the Military Cross. Dorothy also went to England and became a land girl in Swanley Kent. She also attended a course at the Royal School of Needlework and made a beautiful christening robe in readiness for the family she hoped for.1,2,4 James and Dorothy sailed on 13 February 1919 from Liverpool aboard SS Kenilworth Castle for Cape, South Africa. James was described as a civil engineer.5 Her husband James died on 13 July 1965 in White River, Transvaal, South Africa, aged 80.1,2,3 She died on 15 March 1974 in Natal, Durban, South Africa, aged 82.1,2

Percival Wright Greathead
     Percival was the Chief of Sisiwati and Shoshangane Tribe.2 Percival Wright Greathead was born on 30 August 1904 in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa.1,2 He was the son of Henry Percival Greathead and Emily Elizabeth Stanton. Percy visited Dallas in USA and was the guest of John T Orr President of Texas Farm Bureau. He spoke about South Africa rapidly developing into a cotton producing country. His visit was recorded in the Dallas Morning News of 1 October 1924. He took back to outh Africa ten pounds of two different grades of Texas cotton seed.3 Percival travelled on the ship Tahiti leaving Sydney, Australia, arriving in San Francisco in April 1929 on bound for Nelspruit.4 He married Athalie Beryl Broster, daughter of Athol Gordon Broster and Margaret Keen Gibson, on 7 August 1935 in Knysna, Cape Town, South Africa.1,2 He died in 1983 in Knysna, Cape Town, South Africa.1,2 He was buried in Crocodile River, Barclay Vale, Transvaal, South Africa.1,2

     George Erskine's uncle was a Captain in the British Army, he went to Ethiopia in 1918. George ended up as a General and Ambasador. George Erskine was at St Andrews College with PWG. During the 1918 flu (aged 13) he caught a train to Bulawayo and then walked 100 miles through the bush to his family's farm, to find that his father had died a few days earlier.1 George St Vincent Erskine was born in 1905.1 He was the son of Charles Howard Erskine and Charlotte Mildred Greathead. He married Ruth Nelson Ruth was George's first wife. He married Hue Thi Do Hue was George's second wife. He died in October 2003.1
