She married Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London, son of James Henry Greathead and Eliza Julia Wright, on 4 October 1894 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.^1,2 Her husband John died on 26 October 1910 in Serenje, Northern Rhodesia, aged 56 from Sleeping sickness.^1,2,4 Ellen was living at 97 Inverness Terrace, Paddington, London when she received news of the death of her son John Rivers Greathead who was killed in action during WWI.⁵ She died on 14 February 1951 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, aged 87.^1,2,4

     Noël Julia Greathead was born on 19 December 1882 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Esther Louisa Merriman. In the census of 31 March 1901 in The Parsonage, Woolverton, Somerset, England, she was listed as the niece of Rev Federick W Doxat and Aunt Katherine.⁴ Noël or Juel as known by the family did not marry but made a career in journalism, working for Johannesburg Daily Mail and eventually as archivist at the Cape Times. She died on 9 October 1949 in Cape Town, South Africa, aged 66 Juel died suddenly and left all her money to assist in the education of her nephews. She is commemorated in "Equus burchelli Greatheadi", a fossil zebra represented by the type specimen, and almost complete skull which she had collected at Van Wyksfontein.^5,2,3 She was buried on 10 October 1949.²

He married Annie Sarah Rivers, daughter of Thomas Rivers. He died on 17 January 1879 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, aged 52.¹ He left a will to Annie Sarah Bubb and Charles Bubb, brother to hold assets in trust for benefit of Annie Sarah and minor children.¹

     Annie Sarah Rivers was born on 30 March 1840 in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England.¹ She was the daughter of Thomas Rivers. She was baptized on 16 August 1840 in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England.¹ She married William Henry Bubb. Annie took in boarders after husbands death in 1879.¹

     Mary Geraldine Greathead was born on 24 May 1883 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.^1,3,4 She was the daughter of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Esther Louisa Merriman. Geraldine travelled to Port Elizabeth, Algoa Port in South Africa in 1903 from London.⁵ Daniel and Alice, his sisters Julia and Rosa and niece Geraldine travelled to South Africa leaving London on 7 October 1903 bound for the Durban, Port Natal, South Africa. They sailed on SS Fort Salisbury a ship with the Bucknall Steamship Lines Ltd. S G Stephens was the Master of the ship with 90 passengers.⁶ She married Francis Eyton Spurling on 13 December 1913 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.^1,2 She died on 4 June 1916 in Torquay, Devon, England, aged 33 from flu.^1,4,7

     James Merriman Greathead was born on 15 July 1884 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.^1,2,3,4 He was the son of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Esther Louisa Merriman. In the census of 31 March 1901 in Green Hill, Sherbourne, Dorset, England, he was listed as a scholar boarder together with his brother Arthur.⁵ He married Dorothy Charlotte Greathead, daughter of Henry Percival Greathead and Emily Elizabeth Stanton, on 18 September 1915 in Addo, Cape Town, South Africa, Shortly after his marriage James went off to England to join the engineers in the English Army at Aldershot. He then went to the front and built bridges, for which he won the Military Cross. Dorothy also went to England and became a land girl in Swanley Kent. She also attended a course at the Royal School of Needlework and made a beautiful christening robe in readiness for the family she hoped for.^1,2,6 James and Dorothy sailed on 13 February 1919 from Liverpool aboard SS Kenilworth Castle for Cape, South Africa. James was described as a civil engineer.⁷ James travelled on the Queen Mary from Southampton arriving in New York on 23 August 1937.⁸ He died on 13 July 1965 in White River, Transvaal, South Africa, aged 80.^1,2,3

     Arthur Merriman Greathead was born on 6 December 1886 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.^1,2,3,4 He was the son of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Esther Louisa Merriman. In the census of 31 March 1901 in Green Hill, Sherbourne, Dorset, England, he was listed as a scholar boarder together with his brother James.⁵ Arthur was a University student at Clare College, Cambridge in 1905. It was reported in the Guardian newspaper that he was fined £20 and costs for asaulting the police during riots at a bonfire on Midsummer Common on 10 November 1905. Several other students were also fined for varying offences.⁶ He married Carrie Isabel Mabel Swears-Clift on 29 April 1916 in Natal, Durban, South Africa.^1,2 He died on 9 September 1948 in Cape Town, South Africa, aged 61.^1,2,3

     Harold Merriman Greathead was born on 7 July 1889 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, Tony says 1884.^1,2,3 He was buried on 7 July 1889 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.^4,2 He was the son of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Esther Louisa Merriman. He married Kathleen May Collett, daughter of William Hugh Collett and Elizabeth Jane Fugler, on 6 April 1929 in Shamva, Southern Rhodesia, South Africa.¹ Harold left South Africa for health reasons in 1930, so both children were born in England. Initially they experienced hard times because the contract to put a tunnel under the River Thames was cancelled because of the Depression and Harold was only able to find short term contracts on sewerage, the construction of a section of the Thames Embankment and the tube tunnelling project in London. Later he became Deputy Chief Civil Engineer at the BBC before returning to South Africa upon his retirement in 1951 with his wife and daughter Sarah. His son David stayed on in England to complete his studies at Imperial College, London University and then held various research posts in Africa until driven away from Uganda by General Idi Amin in 1973.⁴ He died on 28 June 1974 in 1 Thompson Street, Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, aged 84.^1,2,3,5,6 The will of Harold was proved on 8 July 1975 in Grahamstown, South Africa. He married Mary Gertrude Swinford, daughter of Stephen Swinford and Mary Hedger, in 1920 in Herne Bay, Kent, England.^1,2,5 Ernest and Mary sailed on 11 September 1920 from Glasow aboard SS Ulysses for Cape, South Africa. Ernest was described as a farmer.⁶ Ernest was a right handed batsman for Eastern Province.⁷ He died on 20 December 1951 in Port Elizabeth, Cape Province, South Africa, aged 60.^1,2,3 He was buried in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.¹

He was educated in 1914 in Christs College, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, and was a medical student.² He died on 23 October 1916 in Somme, France, aged 21 He was killed in action. His mother was recorded as living in 97 Inverness Terrace, Paddington, London.^1,2,4,3,5 He was buried in Bancourt British Cemetery, V D 7, Pas de Calais, France.⁶

     Margaret Angela Greathead was born on 26 August 1898.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Ellen Annie Bubb. She married Selby Montague Ernest Gadd, son of Selby Montagu Gadd and Cherry Edmeads, in 1922 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.^1,2 She died in August 1978 in Port Alfred, Cape Town, South Africa.^1,2,3

     Edward Rivers Greathead was born on 22 December 1902.^1,3 He was the son of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Ellen Annie Bubb. In the Times newspaper of 30 September 1933 the engagement was announced of Edward and Helen. Edward was the youngest son of Mrs Greathead and the late Dr J B Greathead of Grahamstown, South Africa and Helen the elder daughter of Mrs Don of Langton Matravers in Dorset and the late Lieutenant - Colonel F Don IA.⁴ He married Helen Mary Don, daughter of Frederick Alexander Don and Ethel F D Ponsford, in 1933 in Kensington, London, England.^1,5 He died on 16 January 1948 in Pinetown, Natal, Durban, South Africa, aged 45.^1,3,6 The will of Edward was proved on 5 February 1949 in Pietermaritzberg to his widow Helen. His effects in England were valued at £2821 15s 7d and probate was sealed on 5 February 1949.⁶

     Walter Robinson Greathead was born on 24 June 1896.^1,2 He was the son of Walter Horatio Greathead and Rosa Louise Candy. Walter, Rosa and their children John and Walter sailed from Southampton on 11 February 1901 aboard SS Arundel Castle for Port Elizabeth, Algoa Bay, South Africa. Little John was listed on the ships manifest as Miss J H. Mrs Candy presumably John's mother in law and Walter's cousin Alice Spackman accompanied them.³ He married Joyce Eagle, daughter of Piercy James Eagle and Annie Dickie Tweddle. Walter suffered from Diabetes and very overweight. He was said to have been sent to Cape Town in a Spitfire during WWll but undercarriage collapsed so had to go by bomber instead!² He died on 20 March 1964 in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa, aged 67.^1,4

     John Harding Greathead was born in 1898.¹ He was the son of Walter Horatio Greathead and Rosa Louise Candy. Walter, Rosa and their children John and Walter sailed from Southampton on 11 February 1901 aboard SS Arundel Castle for Port Elizabeth, Algoa Bay, South Africa. Little John was listed on the ships manifest as Miss J H. Mrs Candy presumably John's mother in law and Walter's cousin Alice Spackman accompanied them.⁴ He died on 11 January 1918 in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, England, in action whilst flying in WWI. An inquest was held at Napsbury Military, Hertfordshire, on 2nd Lieutenant John Harding Greathead of Johannesburg, member of the Royal Flying Corp. who was killed whilst flying alone. On ascending 100ft up flames broke out and the aircraft fell. Verdict accidental death. His usual address was 3 Portsea Place, Paddington, Middlesex.^{1,5,2,6,7,8,9,10} He was buried in St Albans Cemetery, Ref E D 24, St Albans, Hertfordshire, England.⁵ He did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 27 September 1918 in London to his cousin Percival Frere Smith # 2726 barrister the attorney of his father Walter Horacio Greathead # 2661. His effects were valued at £109 0s 6d.⁹

     Constance Eileen Greathead was born on 27 August 1902 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, and was twin to Maria otherwise known as Molly.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Walter Horatio Greathead and Rosa Louise Candy. She married Percival Thomas Stephenson, son of William Bigger Stephenson, on 8 February 1927 Constance was a teacher.^2,3 Her husband Percival died on 5 February 1972 aged 75.³ She died in 1975 in South Africa.³

     Mary Julia Greathead was born on 27 August 1902 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, and twin of Constance.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Walter Horatio Greathead and Rosa Louise Candy. She married John P Lang. She died Molly stayed with her son David and his wife on a farm called Rustfontein, near Pietersburg in South Africa until her death in 1980's.³
