     Charles Christopher Greathead was born on 25 December 1860 in 14 Hawksworths Yard, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, His father John was described as a Cordwainer and Post Office Letter carrier.1,5,6,7,8 He was the son of John Greathead and Ann Morley. In the census of 7 April 1861 in 14 Hanksworth Road, High Street, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead.9 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 15 Hawsworth Yard, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead Charles was a scholar.10 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 39 Dobie Street, Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the brother in law of Charles Law Charles was a cokeburner.2,11 The family lived in Dodsworth Road in Barnsley in 1883 later moving by 1897 to 431 Shoreham Street, Sheffield in Yorkshire.2 He married Hannah Harper, daughter of Christopher Harper and Esther Naylor, on 29 March 1883 in Baptist, Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, Witnesses John E Greathead and Kate Greathead.2,12 Charles was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 5 April 1891 in 27 Cope Street, Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, Charles was a coal cutter.13 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 5/6 Infirmary Road, Nether Hallam, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as a boarder Christopher was working as a night soil carter but boarding away from home on night of census.14 He died on 2 March 1924 in 42 Parker Street, Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, aged 63 from valvular disease of the heart and bronchitis cardiac failure.2,15,5,16

     Thomas Shaw was born about 1790.2 He married Fanny Rice, daughter of John Rice, on 7 April 1839 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, Thomas was her second husband.1 Thomas was listed as the head of the family on the census of 6 June 1841 in Upper Windsor, Aston, Warwickshire, England, Thomas was a glass blower.3

James Henry Greathead
     James Henry Greathead was born on 12 December 1819 in Dudley, Staffordshire, England.1,2,4,3 He was the son of James Henry Greathead and Martha Hewitt. This young man, James Henry rode alone (sent by step father William Smith to earn own living) from Bathurst to Grahamstown when he was only 14 years of age in the midst of murdering bouts by blacks in 1834. He earned his own living from this age by being taken in by future father in law William Wright, and starting his own firm Greathead and Bate.

He died at Fairlawn -The St George's burial registry gives "William Henry" age 40 years 2 months! He did return shortly to England between 1860-64 to see his family, although he returned to South Africa and moved into the only available house "Fair Lawn", a thatched roofed cottage standing in eleven acres of ground. This cottage he converted into a fine double-storied house. He died suddenly in 1864.5,2
He married Eliza Julia Wright, daughter of William Wright and Rosa Stratford, on 21 February 1842 in Prospect, Craddock, Tarkstad, Cape Town, South Africa, by Rev Wm Shaw.1,2,4,6 James was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 April 1861 in 11 Norfolk Villas, Kensington, London, England, James was a Merchant from the Cape of Good Hope.7 He died on 8 March 1864 in Fairlawn, Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, aged 44 He had a stroke the day after Christmas, and became paralysed and speechless until his death. he had been caught in a hailstorm while out hunting springbok at Aliwal North. He caught a severe chill which developed into rheumatism.8,9,4 He was buried on 10 March 1864 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, The St George's Burial register gives William Henry and age 40 years 2 months.1,2,4,10
