She was a slow steamer but could sail well and was used for commerce protection across the globe. Launched by John Elder & Co Govan, Yard No 208, on 26 September 1878 and sold to King, a rm of ship breakers at Garston in Liverpool on 15 September 1899. Completed in 1880 and she took part in the flag showing Flying Squadron that visited Montevideo, Capetown, Australia, Fiji, Japan and China. On their return, Carysfort was detached to the Mediterranean to join in the Egyptian war. She landed men for the naval brigade at Sudan in 1884 and 1885. 1886 Mediterranean, serving in Greek Waters. 1887 Re-commissioned at Malta. 1890 Mediterranean
